I don’t know if this is just me being overly sensitive but I feel like Twitter has been a depressingly negative and passive aggressive place lately. It’s not so much that more and more people are tweeting negative things, but more so that the few people who are doing so are doing it in a way that is so overwhelming it is difficult to ignore. I just want to know when Twitter got so snarky, ya know? Does that even make sense? Is it just me?
Now I know that during award shows the snark levels on Twitter get turned up times a million, but tonight people seemed weirdly extra aggressive and frighteningly personal. And it got me thinking about how silly it is that we develop these strong opinions about people we have never even met. Especially to the point of saying such personal and hateful things (LEAVE ANNE ALONE). And I realized, I do this exact same thing, except instead of excessively hating people I’ve never met, I am crazy obssessed/in love with them (Hi Ben Affleck and Lena Dunham!). Does that make me a hypocrite? I don’t really know. All I do know is that I would rather irrationally love people I have never met than irrationally hate them.
Whew, is it just me or is it getting rant-y in here?? All I really wanted to say is that instead of sharing all of the things I hated about the award show (as all of the articles will probably do tomorrow) I am going to share everything I loved. Because boy did I love tonight’s Golden Globes! (I may or may not have watched it twice…)
And the award goes to…
Amy Poehler and Tina Fey
Eddie Redmayne
BEN AFFLECK
All of the backless dresses and side boob
Was it just me or was tonight home to some of the most gracious speeches of all time?
The British Invasion. The British are taking over Hollywood and I am perfectly okay with this. Was anyone else excited to learn (or re-learn) that Damien Lewis, Robert Pattinson, and Christian Bale all have the most amazing accents?
Hugh Jackson Jackman thanking is wife for always being right.
Ben Affleck’s beard
The announcement of Meryl Streep’s new movie - The Flu.
HOMELAND
The entire ten minutes that Kristin Whyg and Will Pharrell were on stage.
That moment when Kristin Wiig and Will Ferrell were killing it on stage and Tommy Lee Jones was not impressed.
The ten million times they showed Jack Black. No seriously why was he there? I like to think he was just in the neighborhood and wanted to hang out.
Amy Poehler and George Clooney
Ben Affleck
Jen Garner
Ben Affleck and Jen Garner
Bill Rodham Clinton
Realizing that the Rodham-Clintons and Garner-Afflecks are the closest thing this country has to royalty.
That moment when Ben Affleck thanked his agent for staying by his side through “the dark years”. I never left your side either, Ben!
Lena Dunham making me cry because that’s what you do for your best friend (even though she doesn’t know that’s what we are).
Getting to watch Girls have an incredible night and then immediately switching over to HBO to watch the season premiere. I am just so happy it is back!
Eddie Redmayne.
Everything about J-Law’s speech.
KRISTEN BELL’S CUTE PREGNANT BELLY.
Anne Hathaway’s speech (aka the moment she made Sally Field (and America) cry).
Lena Dunham thanking Chad Lowe (aka Aria’s Dad (aka is Lena A????))
Claire Danes acknowledging how great television is as a medium.
BEN AFFLECK WINNING THE CRITIC’S CHOICE AWARD AND GOLDEN GLOBE AWARD FOR BEST PICTURE ALL IN THE SAME WEEK THAT THE STUPID ACADEMY SNUBBED HIM.
Realizing that Glenn Close has never been drunk.
Jodie Foster’s speech and the way she was able to move everybody to tears.
===
Okay confession I legitimately cried three times during three speeches tonight: Lena Dunham’s, Jodie Foster’s, and Ben Affleck’s. It is what it is.
Oh and Ben? I just wanted you to know that George and I forgive you for forgetting to thank us.
